Everyone at KSS would like to pay tribute to Professor Douglas Chamberlain, one of the founding figures of paramedicine in the UK, who sadly passed away earlier this week. Our thoughts are with his family.
The work done in the early 1970s by Douglas, a renowned cardiologist and highly-respected associate of SECAmb, led to the birth of the paramedic profession in the UK.
He was a visionary who believed that patients deserved expert care not just in hospital, but from the very moment of need, and strove for better outcomes for those suffering cardiac arrests out of hospital, something which we too are passionate about.
Duncan Bootland, our Medical Director, said: “We are saddened to hear of the death of Douglas Chamberlain. Douglas was a true pioneer of pre-hospital care and was loved and admired by all those at KSS who met and knew him. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.”
Douglas Chamberlain’s work laid the foundation for the advanced pre-hospital critical care that we now provide across Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Without his trailblazing efforts, the concept of bringing hospital-level care to the roadside, the home, or the most remote of locations might never have become a reality.
